Who Is The Engage Clinic?

Our  Mission  - "The mission of the Engage Free Medical Clinic is to live out the Gospel message, helping to promote the welfare of our community by providing free, high quality and comprehensive health care and wellness services to the economically disadvantaged and uninsured."

Our Virtues - Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness – Galatians 5:22-23

As of 2018, The United States, and Oklahoma in particular, faced a crisis in health care. Oklahoma ranked second in the nation in uninsured at 14.2 percent or 1 in 7. (545,00). These costs were absorbed by hospitals in the form of $592 million in uncompensated care, which then was passed on to the citizens.

Children in Oklahoma fare slightly better at 1 in 10 being uninsured according to the 2017 American Community Survey of the U.S. Census Bureau, although at 9.5 percent, Oklahoma still ranks 15th in the nation for uninsured children.

2019 saw a little improvement, but not much.

This problem effects Shawnee area citizens, maybe to a greater degree, with an estimated median household income of $35,654 compared to the state average of $49,176. Those people, who fall thru the cracks for whatever reason, have very few options other than going to the emergency room for primary care. Other than the Pottawatomie County Health Department, which does wonderful work but obviously appeared by initial research to be overwhelmed and the only free clinic in the Pottawatamie county area is a small free clinic in Seminole County, to the Southeast. As of September, 2019, Lincoln County has no free clinic.

In response to Aydelotte’s prayer recently of finding more local ministry opportunities, God  presented us with the possibility to help minister to this problem in September of 2018.  We had the opportunity to set up a free clinic and non-narcotic pharmacy at Aydelotte Baptist Church (in Pottawatomie County but close to Lincoln County) and set it up as a completely self-sufficient ministry with the assistance of Bill Sisson, a retired consultant to the SBC North American Mission Board in Health Care Ministries as well as the State BGCO Healthcare Ministries Coordinator. Talking with members of the local health community also found a desire to support, both with financial and consulting services to help adapt and make it a success.

So a group of individuals went to work. They named Frank Kelly to be the intial volunteer clinic director. Paperwork was filed, permits and liscenses were obtained, volunteers were recruited and by February of 2019, test clinics began to perfect a clinic model. By September of 2019, non-profit corporation papers were filed, a supervising board of church and community members was seated and Engage was open officially and running twice a month.

2020 has been a year of streamlining and efficiency. Even through Covid-17, we have persevered and even grown. We look forward to continuing to provide as much medical service to our community as possible.
